Virginia Quilt Museum announces new executive director

mccrayThe Virginia Quilt Museum announces the appointment of a new executive director, Kimberly L. McCray.

McCray was previously the director of the nationally recognized Port o’ Plymouth historic museum in eastern North Carolina. In addition to museum management, McCray, who is originally from Augusta County, has experience as a teacher with the U.S. Peace Corps in Ukraine, as a teaching assistant at North Carolina State University history department, and as a tutor with the Shenandoah Valley Migrant Education Program.

She has a M.A. in library science from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, a M.A. in public history from North Carolina State University, and a B.A. in history from James Madison University.

“Kimberly McCray’s broad experience and education will benefit the quilt museum’s programs with diverse audiences,” said Barbara Roadcap, president of the museum’s Board of Directors. “Her interest in history and archives will enable her to manage our historical site and work with our textile collection. Her knowledge of our region will help us build our community outreach programs, as well as expand our tourism development. We’re glad she’s decided to return to this area to live.”

A Blue Star Museum, the Virginia Quilt Museum celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2015. Designated as the official quilt museum for the Commonwealth, the museum is a 501(c)3 nonprofit funded solely through private donations, memberships, and revenue from admissions and museum shop sales. The Virginia Quilt Museum receives no federal or state funding.
