VDOT: Winter weather is not too far away

Chris Graham

snow-plow-headerIt is that time of year again; winter weather is heading our way and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is encouraging motorists to know steps to take should driving become necessary during or immediately after a storm.

VDOT reminds drivers to use caution in winter weather, and;

  • Check current weather, road conditions and traffic before traveling
  • Slow down and allow for extra time to reach your destination
  • Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles, particularly trucks treating the road
  • Be aware of potentially icy areas such as shady spots, bridges and overpasses

VDOT crews monitor forecasts and make plans to respond accordingly.

“We monitor the weather, particularly temperatures and the type of precipitation forecast,” says Tim Wiles, Lynchburg District assistant district administrator for maintenance, “and take steps necessary to ensure that we have the right equipment and materials ready to combat whatever comes our way.”

VDOT has stockpiled sand, salt and mixed abrasives for the winter season, as well as begun production of brine to use should the need arise.

VDOT’s goal is to have all state-maintained roads passable within with 48 hours after the end of a storm. Motorists should be aware of the presence of state equipment before, during and after the storm.  Let highway crews work for you —keep a safe distance behind plows and do not attempt to pass them. Also, park vehicles in driveways or off roadways and, again, keep your eyes on the forecast.
