VDOT prepared for coming snowstorm, winter weather

Chris Graham

snow-plow-headerThe Virginia Department of Transportation is making preparations for winter weather forecast for tomorrow and into Tuesday, and advises motorists to consider altering their travel plans accordingly.

The storm is expected to begin this evening as rain and change over to snow early on Monday morning, with accumulation of one to five inches in central Virginia. VDOT will not apply brine pre-treatment since rain would wash the brine off the roadway.

Crews will report to work tonight and begin treating roads with salt and sand once wintry precipitation begins. Operators will begin plowing once the snow accumulates, focusing first on the interstates and primary highways and shifting resources to the secondary road system as conditions warrant.

Motorists are encouraged to carefully review weather and road reports before travel and consider alternate arrangements such as teleworking. Be advised that roads are likely to be slick through Tuesday due to below-freezing temperatures.

Road conditions and other real-time travel information can be found on the 511 Virginia website, the free VDOT 511 mobile app or by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia. VDOT updates are also on Facebook and the district’s Twitter account, @VaDOTCulp.
