VDOT considering removal of signal at Rio Road West, Four Seasons Drive

Chris Graham

vdot-logoThe traffic signal at Route 631 (Rio Road West) and Route 1456 (Four Seasons Drive) in Albemarle County entered flashing mode on Thursday as the Virginia Department of Transportation considers removal of the signal.

VDOT has studied operation of the intersection and determined that the traffic volume on Four Seasons Drive is too low to warrant a signal, based on standards set forth by the Federal Highway Administration. Because of this condition, traffic on Rio Road West experiences unnecessary delays and the risk of rear-end crashes is heightened.

For the next 90 days, the traffic signal will flash yellow for traffic on Rio Road West. Through and right-turning motorists should proceed with caution and do not have to stop; motorists making left turns should first yield to oncoming traffic.

A flashing red light will display on Four Seasons Drive, where motorists must come to a complete stop before proceeding. Stop signs and stop bars have also been installed on Four Seasons Drive.

VDOT traffic engineers will observe traffic operations at the intersection, and if conditions are met, the traffic signal heads will be removed after 90 days.

More information about traffic signals can be found on VDOT’s website at www.virginiadot.org/info/faq-trafficsignals.asp.
