vcuWith high school sports season underway, concerns about concussions are once again top of mind for many athletes and parents.

Concussions, which are a type of traumatic brain injury, are a frequent concern for those playing sports, from children and teenagers to professional athletes. They are caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head, or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain.

On Wednesday, Sept. 14VCU Health will host a Facebook Live interview from noon to 1 p.m. with David Cifu, M.D., chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. Cifu is the principal investigator on a $62.2 million federally funded concussion-focused grant involving multiple universities, military installations and veterans hospitals. The consortium is focused on mild brain injuries, such as concussions, that have been sustained in military combat, but it also looks at concussions sustained in the civilian and sports sectors. Cifu recently co-authored an editorial that was published in the American Journal of Public Health calling for increased research and funding for concussion treatment.

During the chat, Cifu will answer questions about how to prevent, diagnose and treat concussions. Join the conversation by commenting on Facebook with your questions or tweeting us using #VCUHealthChat.
