UVa. men’s lacrosse earns NCAA berth, hosts Johns Hopkins on Sunday

Chris Graham

uva-logo-new2UVa. has received a bid to the 2014 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship as the No. 8 seed and will host johns hopkins in the first round on Sunday, May 11 at 1 p.m., at Klöckner Stadium. The game will be televised live on ESPN2 in HD. This marks the second season (2001) where Virginia was seeded as the tournament’s No. 8 team.

Virginia, ranked No. 7 in the USILA coaches poll and No. 8 in the Warrior/Inside Lacrosse media poll, enters the NCAA Tournament with 10-5 overall mark. Johns Hopkins, ranked No. 6 in both the coaches and media polls, earned an at-large berth and enters the NCAA Tournament with a 10-4 record.

The winner of the Virginia-johns hopkins first round game will meet the winner of Sunday’s first round game between the Air Force-Richmond winner and Duke (No. 1 seed) in the NCAA quarterfinals. The quarterfinal game will be held at Delaware Stadium, in Newark, Del., on Sunday, May 18. The quarterfinals will be televised on ESPNU in HD.

Fans may purchase tickets for the NCAA first round game beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 5 online at VirginiaSports.com, by calling (800) 542-8821, or in person at the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office in Bryant Hall. General admission tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for youth 18-and-under and students of the participating schools with a valid student ID.

Reserved season ticket holders will have until Wednesday, May 7 at 5 p.m. to purchase their same seats for $10. Remaining Reserved seat tickets will then go on sale to the general public.

Parking for Sunday’s game is $5 in the University Hall and McCue Center lots. This charge applies to fans attending Sunday’s baseball, men’s lacrosse, and women’s lacrosse games. Free parking will be available in the Emmet/Ivy Garage. The John Paul Jones Arena parking lot and garage will not be available for lacrosse and baseball parking on Sunday (May 11) because of events at the arena.

This is Virginia’s 36th tournament appearance overall, third behind johns hopkins (42) and Maryland (37). Virginia has won five NCAA titles and has received a bid in 20 of Dom Starsia’s 22 seasons on Grounds.

Virginia is 29-57-1 all-time against johns hopkins. Sunday’s game will be the 15th time in NCAA Tournament history UVa and johns hopkins have met. No two teams have faced each other more in the tournament than the Cavaliers and Blue Jays. johns hopkins holds an 8-6 advantage over UVa in NCAA Tournament action, but the Cavaliers have won four of the last five meetings in the tournament.

The Cavaliers defeated the Blue Jays met during the 2014 regular season. Virginia won that game 11-10 in overtime on March 22 at Klockner Stadium.
