Arlington County authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at the Arlington County Detention Facility on Monday.
Tyrone Hines, 62, died at Virginia Hospital Center after experiencing an apparent medical emergency while in custody at the jail, per a report from the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office and the Arlington County Police Department.
The official word is that a deputy sheriff who was alerted by an emergency call button activation located inside Hines’ cell at 7:49 a.m. Monday observed Hines experiencing an apparent medical emergency and immediately notified detention facility medical staff, who responded and began providing emergency medical care and life-saving measures.
The Arlington County Fire Department was notified and continued emergency medical care upon arrival. Hines was transported to the Virginia Hospital Center, where life-saving efforts continued.
Hines was pronounced deceased in the hospital’s emergency department.
Hines had been booked into the Arlington County Detention Facility on July 20, 2025, and was being held on an attempted robbery charge.
The Virginia online courts database reports that Hines was scheduled to go to trial on the charge on Oct. 7.
Arlington County Police is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Hines’ death.
