Sixth-year safety Antonio Clary is, at best, questionable for UVA Football’s game on Saturday with Louisville with a knee injury sustained in the fourth quarter of the win over Boston College last weekend.
“AC is dealing with a little swelling in his knee. Got away to get MRI and all that to figure out exactly the extent of the knee. Don’t anticipate that he’ll be able to go this week until the swelling calms down,” UVA coach Tony Elliott told reporters on Tuesday.
Clary leads the UVA defense with 48 tackles on 293 defensive snaps, and has the unit’s second-highest Pro Football Focus grade, at 77.0.
Clary is second on the defense with 20 tackles on run plays, and leads the D with a 46.2 NFL passer rating against – with six receptions allowed on 13 pass targets for 124 yards, with three pass breakups and one INT.
At this point, Elliott doesn’t sound hopeful on Clary’s status for Louisville.
More injury updates
Wideout Trell Harris is “day-to-day. Hopeful for Trell,” Elliott said.
Harris has missed the past two games. Over the season’s first three games, he had 13 catches on 18 targets, for 201 yards and two TDs, and a 69.9 PFF grade.
“Trell’s hopeful. He’s getting better every day. But for him, his is a deal that’s going to bother him off and on for the rest of the season. It just becomes more of a pain tolerance type deal with the knee,” Elliott said.
Slot receiver Chris Tyree is dealing with a groin injury.
“You want to be really, really careful with that so it doesn’t progress to any type of sports hernia. So, we’re waiting on results from, actually waiting on an MRI,” Elliott said.
Tyree has 12 catches on 16 targets for 48 yards and a 51.0 PFF grade in four games this season.
Cornerback Kempton Shine should be a go for Saturday.
“Had to get a little work on the knee, but he’s progressing well,” Elliott said.
Shine, on 237 defensive snaps, has 10 tackles, and has allowed seven receptions on 14 targets, for 90 yards and two touchdowns, with two pass breakups, and a 71.7 PFF grade.
Malcolm Greene redshirting, intends to transfer
Fifth-year senior cornerback Malcolm Greene is going to redshirt and intends to transfer to finish out his college career.
“I respect the decision. Did everything the right way,” Elliott said. “Malcolm’s been a great addition to our program. Really helped establish the culture in a competitive situation. And with one season left, really wanted to try to maximize that opportunity.”
Greene was on the field for 82 snaps in four games for the UVA Football team in 2024, with four tackles, and three receptions allowed on five targets going for 23 yards and a TD, and a 67.7 PFF grade.
Greene, a Clemson transfer, was in on 264 snaps at UVA in 2023, with 15 tackles, and 11 receptions allowed on 18 targets, for 239 yards and two TDs, and a 55.5 PFF grade.
“All positive. No issues there,” Elliott said. “It’s just strictly a young man, he had to wait his turn before he got here. Last year played a little bit. Was splitting some time with Corey (Thomas), and I get it, I don’t blame him. He’s leaving on good terms. Everything is good. It’s just kind of where we are in college football.”
