Thijs de Ridder scored 23 points, as Virginia exploded for 61 first-half points en route to a 104-78 victory over Marshall Saturday afternoon in John Paul Jones Arena.

Virginia (4-0) never trailed during their season-opening four-game home stand.

The ‘Hoos scored a JPJ-record 61 points in the first half and reached 100 points for the first time since defeating Marshall on Dec. 31, 2018.

What has Ryan Odom’s new style offense brought to UVA Basketball?

Last year under interim coach Ron Sanchez, Virginia scored 61 or fewer points in 10 games.

In Tony Bennett’s final year at Virginia, the Cavaliers scored fewer than 61 in 15 games.

Again, this afternoon, UVA put 61 points on the scoreboard in the opening half.

Virginia hit the century mark this afternoon when de Ridder hit a jumper to make it 100-74 with 1:56 remaining.

I believe what was left of an announced attendance of just under 12,000 hung around to see if the scoreboard could display a three-digit score.

Marshall entered the game averaging 13.3 made three-pointers, but finished 7-of-24 from long-range.

Thundering Herd head coach Cornelius Jackson said after the contest that it was easy to see why this Virginia team in considered an upper tier ACC squad.

“Hey, this Virginia team has scorers everywhere. They are very difficult to defend, and they have so many different looks,” said Jackson.

Game Notes

A few high school recruits were in attendance today, including RJ Moore, a 6’7’’ scoring guard who has elate shooting skills and is a leaper. Moore is considered Virginia’ top recruiting target.

Silas Barksdale was on the floor after the contest shooting with Virginia team managers. Easy to see why this was a four-star recruit and a huge get and keep for Odom. He has a soft release and was knocking down three-pointers from all over the floor.

Virginia’s next contest will be a neutral-site game at the Greenbrier Classic Friday evening against Northwestern.
