The game was decided in the middle innings. Both teams’ starters – Virginia’s Jay Woolfolk and Oregon State’s Nelson Keljo – were limited by tight early-season pitch counts.
Woolfok was lifted after giving up two runs on seven hits in three innings, striking out six and walking two.
Keljo went four innings, giving up two runs on two hits, striking out three and walking four.
OSU got a shutdown middle-relief outing from right-hander Eric Segura (2-0, 1.50 ERA), who put up three and a third innings of three-hit scoreless relief, striking out eight and walking two.
Virginia’s middle relievers, meanwhile, took it on the chin – Joe Colucci (0-1, 10.80 ERA) took the loss, after giving up a two-run single to nine-hole hitter AJ Singer in the fifth.
Blake Barker (1 IP, 1 ER, 2H, 1K/1BB) and Wes Arrington (1.2 IP, 2 ER, 1H, 3K/2BB) were also touched up for runs out of the UVA bullpen.
The Virginia offense managed just six hits, all singles, on the night.
Chris Arroyo was 2-for-4 at the plate, with a two-run single in the third that put the ‘Hoos on top at the time.
Next up for Virginia: a game with Minnesota, at noon ET on Saturday.
