Staunton Senior Center was in full swing with holiday activity and otherwise, starting out the day with a Memory Screening through the Alzheimer’s Foundation. Two lovely nurses provided by the local Health Department screened four members and three guests. Even though the numbers were small, the screening was worthwhile as it was recommended that some of the participants speak with their physicians when they next have appointments.
Happy Notes, a local singing group with older members hailing from various churches, entertained with Christmas music for members, staff, and those waiting for the Memory Screening. Later in the day Al Leichter, our local authority on rhythm and blues music, brought the sounds of the season into the front room of the Center. Many faces held that look of remembering back to yesteryear as they listened, tapped their toes, and even danced to the beat!
Abby Armstrong from Amedisys Home Health provided treats and information especially delivered to those who are diabetic, providing tips on healthy eating during the holidays. She recommended fresh fruit (not a surprise!), unsalted peanuts, and certain brands such as Lorna Doone cookies which have significantly less sugar than many other brands. Wheat Thins are good with less sodium and sugar, and there is an orange juice that has fifty percent less sugar, as well as diet cranberry juice. Watch the sodium in the latter as it tends to be high! Werther’s has sugar free caramel and caramel cinnamon candy too. So one can eat on the lighter side during the holidays!
