Graduates of the Virginia State Police Academy have received their first-duty assignments.

Hayden Mick, 28, of Staunton, was among the 21 troopers who graduated from the 141st Basic Session on Friday in a ceremony in North Chesterfield County. Mick will be assigned near Staunton in Augusta County.

During the 30 weeks at the VSP Academy, trooper-trainees received more than 1,300 hours of instruction in more than 100 different subjects over the course of hundreds of hours.  Academy training includes areas such as crime scene investigation, judicial procedures, self-defense, cultural diversity and firearms.

“Our recruiting staff is committed to ensure the citizens of Virginia have the strongest department possible, and troopers who have the highest levels of professionalism,” said Colonel Gary T. Settle, Superintendent of the Virginia State Police.

New troopers report to their duty assignments on Sept. 3.

For the final phase of training, each trooper will spend an additional six weeks paired with a field training officer learning his or her new patrol area.
