A veteran in Virginia will soon call Anderson Street in Staunton home, offering the individual “dignity and a foundation for a new chapter.”

Nehemias Velez, executive director of the Staunton Redevelopment and Housing Authority, said the finishing work on the cottage-style home is being completed now, and the home will soon provide much more than shelter to a veteran.

“This home symbolizes a commitment to our community’s revitalization and affordable housing, for the most vulnerable among us,” said Velez. “When we talk about supporting our veterans, it’s more than words; we are creating real pathways to stability.”

The tenant hasn’t been announced yet, but the rental will be offered through the Department of Housing and Urban Development-Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing, or HUD-VASH, voucher program. The program connects veterans with affordable housing and ongoing case management through the Department of Veteran Affairs.

A licensed contractor recently transported the house to 958 Anderson St., placed it on a permanent foundation and is currently completing electrical, plumbing, HVAC, siding and site improvements.

The Staunton Housing Corporation and SRHA worked together to secure the home. SHC aims to provide safe, affordable housing for low-income families, seniors, veterans and individuals with disabilities in Staunton and Augusta County.
