A 22-month-old child in New Castle walked away from a daycare facility and was found walking toward Route 311 when a state police trooper spotted them and got the child to safety.

The Department of Social Services has been notified of the incident which occurred on Friday at 10:30 a.m.

The trooper, C. Viera-Cintron, was working on traffic enforcement in Craig County when they spotted the child walking toward the middle of Salem Avenue.

The child was not injured, according to Virginia State Police.

After checking with nearby residences, Viera-Cintron then went to a nearby daycare facility, where it was determined the child had left his teacher from an area in the back of the daycare.

The 22-month-old was away from the teacher for approximately 11 minutes.

The daycare facility has notified both the parents of the 22-month-old child and relevant permitting agencies, according to VSP.

Virginia State Police and the Craig County Sheriff’s Department notified Social Services, according to a release.

AFP has reached out to VSP to confirm information on social media related to the incident.
