Update: Falling temperatures expected to refreeze roads in Shenandoah Valley

Snow arrived in the early morning hours coating many areas with 2 to 3 inches of snow with up to 5 inches in some higher elevations.

Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton District crews and contractors spent all day clearing and treating roadways. Brining operations were conducted on Friday.

All interstate and primary roads are reported in clear condition with minor conditions is several counties within the Staunton District. Crews will monitor roads throughout the evening. Travelers throughout the Staunton District should be alert for refreezing on wet road surfaces tonight. Drive defensively, use caution and always buckle up.

Bridges, overpasses and elevated road surfaces such as box culverts will freeze first.

Here are the conditions as of 5 p.m. Sunday in the VDOT Staunton District:

  • Interstate 64 – Clear conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.
  • Interstate 66 – Clear conditions in Warren County
  • Interstate 81 – Clear conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Frederick counties.
  • Primary roads – Clear conditions in Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany and Bath counties.
  • Secondary roads – Minor conditions in Bath, Alleghany, Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Warren and Page counties. Clear conditions in Highland, Frederick, and Clarke counties.

For road condition updates go to www.511Virginia.org, look at the orange bar on the top of the page and click on “Text Views” and then click on “Road Condition Table”. Look at the pull down box that lists all jurisdictions. In this box individual counties can be chosen.
