Smyth County: Identification still pending in Friday fatal crash on Route 16

One person is dead in a two-vehicle crash that occurred at 9:34 a.m. this morning on Route 16 in Smyth County.

The fatal crash occurred at the intersection with Old Prater Road.

One person died, and one person was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, according to Virginia State Police.

A Toyota Scion was travelling eastbound on Route 16 when it crossed the center line.

A Dodge Ram was travelling westbound on Route 16 and tried to avoid the Scion, but the vehicles collided head on.

The driver of the Scion died at the scene.  Identification is still pending, according to VSP.

The driver of the Dodge was taken to Smyth County Hospital with serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
