The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of April, is featuring the artwork of Kaleb Gay, a self-taught artist who lives and works in Lynchburg.
His work embraces a format that creates a living breathing world, transforming the gallery for the next two months. This will not be an ordinary art exhibit. Gay’s installation includes a central nesting place where you can rest inside his psyche in the form of a room within a room. Look for books, sound, moving pictures, and art EVERYWHERE. Gay’s work is urban visionary with a street art sensibility. Art exists to tell stories: where we have been, where we are going, and sometimes, where we wish we could go. Kaleb Gay’s art is no different. He is compelled to tell his version of what it means to be human, and he tells it by creating. Collage works are interspersed with stencil pieces, hand-made books, and audio visual installation pieces.
This exhibit is made to be experienced fully, not simply looked at. Come in, sit in the shack, read a book, look at the work, communicate your personal reactions to it… it is a whole new way to experience art. The art center likes to find artists who have new and interesting ways to tell their tales and present their work. Kaleb Gay does not disappoint! An Opening Reception will be held April 5, 6:00-8:00 p.m. and the public is encouraged to come and meet the artist.
The Members’ Gallery will present “Collage,” a selection of creatively composed pieces by member artists. Check out a new exhibition of work in the Docent Room by Eugene Sisson who uses oil and acrylics to bring alive his urban landscapes.
Come enjoy the gathering of folks seeking creative inspiration, camaraderie, and sharing of techniques through art activities and classes. Please join us for a free open studio opportunity on third Thursdays, 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. with the Art Trading Card Group. Also on Thursdays 1:00 – 3:00, Pat Garnett teaches Zentangle, a meditative drawing technique that teaches you to let the creativity flow from your pen. Bring a fine tip permanent marker, paper, and $11 per week. Watercolor classes, taught by Pat Garnet, are designed to meet the needs of the student. Come once, or come every week! Learn from a master! Bring paint, brushes, paper, and creativity each Tuesday in April, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. with an $11 fee per selected session. For adults, Joyce Anderson will be teaching a Box Head class using cardboard and other delights to create a head sculpture, April 25, 1:00 – 4:00p.m., $40 with all supplies included.
Young artists should check out the ever popular Saturday Art for Kids, ages 6 – 10, presenting a creative art experience for children from 11:00a.m. – 1:00p.m. Contact the art center for specific information, cost, and pre-registration for each class.
