shenandoah uThe Harry F. Byrd, Jr. School of Business sport management program, in conjunction with the Sport Business Club, will host a symposium from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 16, in Halpin-Harrison Hall, Stimpson Auditorium, on the campus of Shenandoah University.
The symposium, titled “The Rise in Commercialism and Related Human Rights Issues Within Collegiate Athletics and The Academy,” is free and open to the public.
“With the escalation and continued rise in commercialism, the question of the role of academics in sport continues to be illuminated,” said Assistant Professor of Sport Management Fritz Polite, Ph.D., MPA, who will serve as moderator for the symposium.
“The fundamental agreement between athletics and institutions of higher learning opens doors for discussion around exploitation, academic fraud, major health issues and flawed hiring practices, oftentimes related to gender. How do athlete’s rights factor into the overall discussion? That’s what we’ll tackle at the symposium,” added Dr. Polite.
Featured distinguished guest speakers include:
  • E. Newton Jackson Jr., Ph.D., professor within the Leadership, School Counseling & Sport Management unit within the University of North Florida’s College of Education & Human Services
  • Richard Southall, Ed.D., associate professor and director of the College Sport Research Institute at the University of South Carolina
  • Ellen Staurowksy, Ed.D., professor of sport management at Drexel University
  • John R. Gerdy, Ph.D., an influential sports educator and former associate commissioner for compliance and academic affairs for the Southeastern Conference
These distinguished scholars and former sport administrators will probe the issues in more depth while interacting with the general public at the forum. The symposium panelists are experienced in their respective areas and will provide valuable insight perspectives on the issues.
For more information about the symposium, please contact Polite at 407/758-0811 or [email protected].
