Richmond socks Bowie, 9-4, takes series

richmond-squirrelsThe Richmond Flying Squirrels (14-20) scored nine times in the first four innings and routed the Bowie Baysox (19-18), 9-4, on Sunday afternoon at Prince George’s Stadium.  Richmond took three of four games in the series, posting their fourth consecutive series victory.  The win was the first Sunday victory of the year for the Squirrels, as they had dropped their first five Sunday games.

The Squirrels came out of the corner bunting, and then swinging, in the top of the first inning against right-hander Terry Doyle.  Kelby Tomlinson and Rando Moreno supplied back-to-back bunt-singles to start the ballgame.  Mac Williamson followed and quickly made it 2-0 when he drilled a two-run double to left-center field.  An out later, Devin Harris lined a single to left to plate Williamson.  Two batters later, Daniel Carbonell capped the inning with an RBI single to center field.  All told, the Squirrels sent all nine batters and plated four runs on six hits.

Richmond was back it in the second.  With one out, Moreno rifled a single into right field.  Williamson followed and launched his third home run of the season.  The two-run blast to left-center field made it 6-0 Squirrels.

Bowie got a run back in the bottom of the second against lefty Jack Snodgrass.  Former Squirrel Sharlon Schoop led off with a single back through the middle.  Two batters later, Quincy Latimore drove a double off the top of the fence in left-center field.  Schoop scored just ahead of the relay-throw to the plate to put Bowie on the board for the first time, 6-1.

The Squirrels’ onslaught continued in the third.  With one out, Javier Herrera hooked a double into the left-field corner.  A batter later, Eliezer Zambrano lined his first home run of the season over the right-field wall.  The two-run shot extended the Richmond lead to 8-1.

The Baysox got to Snodgrass again in the bottom of the third.  They strung together four singles to bring around Ozzie Martinez.  Schoop knocked him in with his second hit of the day.

Doyle (2-1) was lifted after three innings.  He was charged with eight runs, six earned, on 11 hits.  He took the loss, his first.

Richmond made it four consecutive innings with at least one run when they tacked on another against right-hander Ben Rowen in the fourth.  Devin Harris knocked in the run with his 11th double of the season, lined to left-center field.

Snodgrass (3-3) locked in after his trouble in the third.  At one stretch he retired nine in a row, and ultimately turned in seven innings for the win.  He allowed just the two early runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out four.

Lefty Phil McCormick handled a scoreless eighth inning.  Bowie capped the scoring for the day with a pair of runs against right-hander Stephen Johnson.  Righty Joan Gregorio came on to close out the win.

The Squirrels continue their road trip as they travel to Erie, PA, to open a three-game series with the Erie SeaWolves (Detroit Tigers) at Jerry Uht Park on Monday night.  The opener is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. as Richmond LHP Matt Lujan (1-3, 4.41) will make the start against Erie LHP Josh Turley (2-2, 3.12).  The Flying Squirrels Pregame Warmup will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Fox Sports 910 and FoxSportsRichmond.com.
