A Richmond grand jury has indicted a Richmond Police Department officer on a misdemeanor assault charge.

Paul Jenkins, 51, of Richmond, has been placed on administrative leave with pay, per department policy, in connection with the incident, which involved a DUI arrest back in April.

During the arrest, Jenkins attempted to remove the arrestee from the transport wagon, and the arrestee suffered an abrasion to his head.

According to a report from the Richmond PD, officers reported the injury to patrol supervision, and medical personnel were called, though the arrestee refused treatment.

Following department policy and procedures, this incident was reviewed by the RPD’s Office of Professional Responsibility and the Chief of Police, which forwarded the investigative findings to the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney, which is standard practice in these matters.

Jenkins has been employed by RPD for 21 years.

An internal review for possible policy violations will take place following the legal proceedings.
