Richmond falls to the bottom of the Western Division

richmond-squirrelsBrandon Waring clubbed two three-run home runs to help the Bowie Baysox (48-45) complete a five-game sweep of the Richmond Flying Squirrels (42-52) with a 7-2 win on Sunday night at Prince George’s Stadium.  The loss extends the Squirrels losing streak to six games while they also fall into last place in the Western Division.  Richmond has gone 8-26 in their last 34 games, tumbling from a high-water mark of eight games over .500.

The Squirrels opened the door with an error in the first inning and the Baysox pounced on the opportunity to take an early lead.  With one out, Niuman Romero reached on an error on Angel Villalona.  Richmond lefty Jack Snodgrass then walked Caleb Joseph to put two aboard.  Waring followed and cracked a three-run home run to right-center field.  His 13th of the season put the Squirrels in a 3-0 hole.

Richmond stranded five runners on base against Bowie left-hander Jake Pettit in the first two innings and did not score.  Mark Minicozzi finally got them on the board in the third.  He blasted his eighth home run of the season off Pettit.  The solo-shot ended a 19-inning scoreless drought for the Squirrels and pulled them within two runs, 3-1.

With one out in the fifth inning, Adam Duvall tripled off the right field wall.  Minicozzi followed and made it a one-run game with a sacrifice fly to right field.  Minicozzi’s second RBI of the ballgame trimmed the Bowie lead to 3-2.

Snodgrass and Pettit each retired after six innings.  Each turned in a quality start, as Snodgrass allowed three runs – two earned – on just three hits.  Pettit allowed two total runs on six hits.  Pettit (5-3) was credited with the win while Snodgrass (7-4) endured the loss.

Waring’s second three-run home run of the night came in the seventh inning off right-hander Cody Hall.  Waring crunched a 3-1 fastball over the left-field wall to put the game out of reach, 6-2.  The runs were the first conceded in the Eastern League by Hall.  It also marked the second time in the series that a Bowie batter had knocked in six runs (Aaron Baker).

The Baysox capped the scoring with a run off lefty Phil McCormick in the eighth inning.  The final cumulative score of the series favored Bowie, 38-5.

The Squirrels continue their week-long road trip as they travel to Binghamton, NY, to open a three-game series with the Binghamton Mets (New York Mets) on Monday night at NYSEG Stadium.  First pitch of the series opener is scheduled for6:35 p.m. as Richmond RHP Taylor Rogers (5-5, 5.85) will make the start against Binghamton RHP Logan Verrett (8-4, 4.22).  The Flying Squirrels Pregame Warmup will begin at 6:05 p.m. on Sports Radio 910, SportsRadio910.com and IHeart Radio.
