PPP: McDonnell up 14

Chris Graham

A Public Policy Polling survey of Virginia voters released on Monday has Republican Bob McDonnell with a 56 percent-to-42 percent lead over Democrat Creigh Deeds on the eve of the 2009 Virginia governor’s election.

Downticket, GOP running mates Bill Bolling and Ken Cuccinelli also appear to be on their way to resounding victories at the polls. Bolling leads Democrat Jody Wagner in the lieutenant-governor race 54 percent to 41 percent, and Cuccinelli leads Steve Shannon 55 percent to 39 percent in the race for attorney general.

Republicans also had a 48 percent-to-39 percent advantage in a generic House of Delegates ballot.

“The streak of good elections for Democrats in Virginia ends tomorrow,” said Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling. “Republicans are going to sweep the statewide races, and the only real suspense is by how much.”

Some telling numbers from the internals:

– 63 percent of those surveyed think McDonnell made a strong case for why he should be governor; only 34 percent think Deeds made his case. Only 36 percent of Deeds supporters think he made his case for why he should be elected.

– McDonnell leads among independent voters by a 63 percent-to-33 percent margin.

– Favorable/unfavorable: McDonnell 55/35, Deeds 39/45.

I’m totally on the side of Dianna Russini in this generated controversy over her being caught holding hands, hugging and lounging in a hot tub with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel.
