Solis (1-1, 4.97 ERA) gave up a two-out RBI double to Brent Morel, followed by an RBI single to Gregory Polanco, to give Pittsburgh the lead.

A two-run Pedro Alvarez homer, his 14th of the season, put the Pirates on the board in the second for a 2-0 lead. The Nationals answered with four in the fourth, on an RBI single by Wilson Ramos, a two-run double by Tyler Moore and an RBI single by Dan Uggla.

Polanco (4) and Neil Walker (8) hit homers off Scherzer in the fifth. Ian Desmond hit his 10th homer, a solo shot, in the sixth to tie the game at 5-5.

Washington (51-44) has a three-game lead over the New York Mets in the National League East.
