Photographer and author Michael O. Snyder will discuss his new book, Alleghania: A Central Appalachian Folklore Anthology, on June 28, at the New Dominion Bookshop in Charlottesville.

The talk and signing will take place at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The photography book was released from The Bitter Southerner’s press in mid-May.

Alleghania is an inspiring new portrait of Central Appalachia. Responding to the gorgeous ancient landscape of the Allegheny Mountains, Snyder presents a collection of portraits from West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

From farmers and herbalists, to skateboarders and train hoppers, Buddhist monks to Christian pastors, this is a love letter to an often overlooked part of Appalachia.

Through a rich tapestry of voices and striking photography, Snyder’s new body of work brings Central Appalachia’s grit, grace and heart clearly into view.

Snyder is a photographer and filmmaker documenting the dynamic relationship between social and environmental change.

Originally from a small town in Appalachia, Snyder has lived around the world, including long-term stints in Scotland, Japan, Hawaii and New Zealand. He currently resides in central New York.

He has worked in more than 50 countries around the world, with stories featured by outlets such as National Geographic andThe Guardian.

He has been honored by awards such as the Portrait of Humanity Award, the Wellcome Prize for Photography, NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism, the Smithsonian Magazine Photography Awards and the Sony World Photography Awards.

In 2024, he was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for photography.

New Dominion Bookshop is located at 404 E. Main St. on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville.
