The Old Dominion University women’s basketball team opened the 2012-13 season on Friday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum with a 55-35 victory over Virginia Tech.

Old Dominion (1-0) scored 14 points off 16 Hokie turnovers and shot 40.7 percent from the field in the second half to go along with five three-pointers.

Senior guard Jackie Cook and sophomore forward Shae Kelley both missed producing double-doubles by just a single rebound as Cook poured in 17 points, 12 of which were in the second half, and added nine rebounds while Kelley scored 14 points with nine rebounds to lead the Lady Monarchs offensively.

Virginia Tech (0-1) shot just 19.6 percent from the field in the first half and 25 percent in the game while their leading scorer from a year ago Monet Tellier scored just one point and was 0-for-9 from the field.

A back-and-forth affair that featured little scoring early, ODU was able to take the lead for good at the 5:24 mark in the first half on Cook’s layup and went on a 9-2 run to the end the half while holding the Hokies scoreless after the 3:28 mark until halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Monarchs outscored the Hokies, 34-22. ODU hit five three-pointers after halftime while Virginia Tech was held to 0-for-12 from behind the arc in the game. The ODU bench added 24 points led by senior forward Mairi Buchan who had 10 points and two three-pointes in the second half.

Porschia Hadley led the Hokies with eight points and seven rebounds while Tellier added nine rebounds. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for ODU in Blacksburg as the last win for the Lady Monarchs at Virginia Tech came in 71-55 win on Dec. 7, 1991.

Old Dominion opens their home slate on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center In Norfolk when they take on USC Upstate.
