Virginia-VCU Series
Virginia holds a 23-2-1 edge in its series with VCU. While the all-time series has been one-sided, the sides have played extremely tight matches in recent years. Three of the last four meetings went to double overtime – all Virginia wins (2009, 2012, 2013) – while the last four matches each have been decided by one goal. UVa won 1-0 last season in Charlottesville on a second-half goal from Sam Hayward.

The Cavaliers were victorious in their last trip to Richmond in 2012, 1-0, on Cameron Chavira’s golden goal in the 103rd minute. VCU’s last win against UVa was a 3-1 victory in Richmond in 2008.

Busy Stretch Continues
Virginia is in the midst of a challenging portion of its schedule. The Cavaliers will play 13 matches in 43 days, with midweek games during six straight weeks. UVa does not get a full week off until a seven-day break between matches against Pitt (Oct. 16) and Virginia Tech (Oct. 23).

Virginia Downs NC State, 1-0
Virginia men’s soccer team remained unbeaten on the season with a 1-0 win over No. 20 NC State Friday at Klöckner Stadium. Jake Rozhansky scored in his third straight match as the Cavaliers pushed their unbeaten streak to 11 matches, dating to their NCAA tournament run in 2014.

The defenses reigned supreme for the majority of the evening, as the sides combined for just seven shots – NC State took four, and UVa finished with three.

Virginia scored the match’s lone goal in the 35th minute on the Cavaliers’ first shot of the match. On a ball sent into the box, Nicko Corriveau flicked the ball toward the goal, and Rozhansky beat the defender to the ball before burying his shot to the far corner.

Rozhansky Looks to Extend Scoring Streak
Jake Rozhansky has made the most of his scoring chances this season, scoring goals in three straight matches. He has recorded his three goals on just five shots on goal this year. Rozhansky is the first Cavalier to score in three straight games since Eric Bird scored against George Mason, Duke and Clemson in consecutive matches from Oct. 7-17, 2014. Rozhansky recorded one goal in 23 matches last year during his freshman season.

Virginia Freshmen Make Immediate Impact
While five Virginia freshmen have played during UVa’s first five matches, Jean-Christophe Koffi was the first to break the scoring column with his goal last Tuesday against JMU. Malcolm Dixon has started four of five matches at right back, while Derrick Etienne, Edward Opoku and Koffi all have contributed significant minutes. Wesley Wade also has seen time off the bench in a pair of matches. The quintet is part of the Cavaliers’ incoming recruiting class that was tabbed the No. 2 best class nationally.

Noting VCU
VCU is 2-4-1 this season but has played one of the nation’s toughest non-conference schedules. Three of the Rams’ four losses have come to teams that currently are ranked among the 11 teams in the latest NSCAA poll – Stanford (4), Coastal Carolina (5) and Akron (11). The Rams played Georgetown to a 2-2 draw in their last match on Thursday at home. Rafael Andrade Santos leads the team with three goals.

Up Next: Notre Dame
The Cavaliers head to No. 2 Notre Dame on Friday (Sept. 25) for a 7 p.m. match in a rematch of a 2014 NCAA round of 16 game, won 1-0 by Virginia. The teams split three meetings last year, 1-1-1.
