Men’s soccer: No. 16 UVA plays Pitt to scoreless draw

virginia soccerThe No. 16 UVA men’s soccer team played Pitt to a scoreless draw on Friday night in rainy, miserable conditions at Ambrose Urbanic Field in Pittsburgh, Pa. Virginia (8-2-5, 2-2-3 ACC) extended its unbeaten streak to eight matches, the Cavaliers’ longest since 2013.

Virginia dominated the possession battle throughout the match. After an uneventful first half which featured no shots on goal, Virginia turned up the heat in the second half and immediately got a quality chance with Nicko Corriveau (Sr., Potomac, Md.) sending a beautiful, low cross deep into the box and just missing the sliding Marcus Salandy-Defour (R-Sr., Kensington, Md.).

Pitt (2-11-3, 0-5-2) had its best scoring chance in the waning seconds of the second half when Kevin Angulo found himself open in the middle of the box following a cross, but he put the shot wide of the post.

UVA again held the majority of the possession in the overtime periods and earned four corners but could not cash in on the golden goal.

Pitt goalkeeper Mikal Outcalt made four saves, while UVA goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell (Jr., Todd, N.C.) was not forced to make a save as he recorded his seventh clean sheet of the season, including his third straight. UVA out-shot Pitt 9-5 and held a 12-1 edge in corner kicks.

Virginia returns home next Friday (Oct. 28) for the regular-season finale against Duke. Prior to the match, UVA will honor seven fourth-year student-athletes in Senior Night ceremonies.
