Mark Warner’s second act: Fighting his instincts, leading the fight against Trump

James Carville is telling Democrats to let Donald Trump and Elon Musk rape America. I have to admit, I didn’t have Mark Warner being the guy leading the pitchfork mob fighting Trump and Musk on my bingo card.

“We’re, what, forty-some-odd days into this new administration. I said I expected a flood. I didn’t expect necessarily a tsunami,” said Sen. Warner, D-Va., once a self-styled “radical centrist,” who I was criticizing as a Vichy Democrat just a few weeks ago, and has now recast himself as a leader in the resistance.

Warner talked at length on a conference call with reporters on Wednesday about the fight against the Trump administration “on a variety of fronts” – standing up for the tens of thousands of federal workers and contractors whose livelihoods are at stake, fighting cuts to the social safety net, most notably, Medicaid.

“The overall budget plan of the Republicans is coming out, where they will cut government services, in particular Medicaid, and frankly, to provide tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. That’s just not fair. It’s just not right. And you know, we’ll stand in the breach,” Warner said.

Contrast this to Carville, the veteran Democratic strategist, who is advising Democrats to “play possum,” that they don’t need to be aggressive in fighting back against Trump because the “collapse is already under way.”

“This whole thing is collapsing,” Carville said. “It doesn’t need Elizabeth Warren and somebody screaming to pacify some progressive advocacy groups in Washington, which, by the way, I wish these people were just useless, they’re actually worse than useless, they’re detrimental. And they never, ever learn to shut up.”

There’s the wisdom the pols pay big money for – Trump and Musk are doing everything they can to dismantle the federal government, but if we can just keep our mouths shut for 30 days, it’ll be “easy pickings.”

Gotta love the lack of self-awareness there from ol’ Carville, who doesn’t seem to get that, the swing in public opinion on Trump and Musk is a reflection of the anger of millions of Americans at the active efforts of the MAGAs to tear down the underpinnings of society.

The likes of Hakeem Jeffries, the House Minority Leader, who are following Carville’s lead, sitting quietly on the sidelines, are themselves catching heat from the millions who are upset that they’re not doing anything to fight for them and to fight for America.

This is where I credit Warner, for recognizing that what comes naturally to him – working across the aisle to achieve consensus – isn’t what is needed now.

People want somebody who will fight for them and with them, not go along to get along.

“They didn’t vote for this,” Warner said, speaking of voters who cast their lots with Trump in the November election, and are now having second thoughts.

“They voted because they thought Donald Trump was going to slow inflation and bring down grocery prices,” Warner said. “He’s done absolutely nothing on those issues. Matter of fact, he spent more time trying to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America than he’s talked about the price of eggs. I think people are starting to have buyer’s remorse.”

Yes, and not just with Trump and Musk.
