Lynchburg Hillcats hang on, defeat Winston-Salem, 10-9

lynchburg hillcatsLynchburg jumped out to a 10-0 lead, but had to hold off a late Winston-Salem charge to win 10-9 on Saturday night at BB&T Ballpark. D.J. Brown earned his career-high 10th win of the season with the victory.

 

RUNS FOR DAYS

Lynchburg wasted no time jumping out to an early lead on the Dash by scoring 10 runs in the first four innings. In the first,Yhoxian Medina scored on a RBI by Clint Frazier and Mike Papi drove home LeVon Washington to give the Hillcats a 2-0 lead.

 

In the top of the second, Washington and Frazier drove home Claudio Bautista and Ivan Castillo with back-to-back RBI singles that put the Hillcats up 4-0.

Nellie Rodriguez lifted a sacrifice fly to left that scored Medina to complete a three-run frame and extended the lead to five runs.

 

ADDING TO THE TOTALS

Facing a 3-1 count in the top of the third, Washington roped a three-run bomb, his first home run of the year, over the right field wall to give Lynchburg an 8-0 lead.

Lynchburg added two more runs in the top of the fourth when Sicnarf Loopstok and Dorssys Paulino scored on a fielding error by Keon Barnum that put the Hillcats up 10-0 through four frames.

 

ANOTHER GREAT OUTING

D.J. Brown picked up his 10th win of the season as he pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out three. He left the game in the bottom of the sixth with two outs and the bases loaded as Trevor Frank took over. Winston-Salem scored two runs in the sixth and seventh innings and added five runs in the bottom of the eighth to bring the Dash within one, 10-9 and carried all of the momentum into the ninth.

 

HOLD ON TIGHT

Winston-Salem’s Adam Engel singled with two outs and Eddy Alvarez followed with a double to put the tying run on third and the game-winning run at second before Justin Brantley forced Jake Peter to fly out to left field to end the game and squash the comeback attempt.

KEEPING UP WITH THE CATS

LeVon Washington went 3-for-4 at the plate and tied a season-high with four RBIs…Washington’s home run in the third inning was his first of the year for the Hillcats and he now has 17 RBIs in 22 games…With 10 hits in the game, the Hillcats have recorded double-digit hits in six of their last 10 games.
