Analysis

UVA and State get similar percentages of their points from threes; State gets more of its points in the paint outside of the circle on floaters and short jumpers, which isn’t as efficient.

State also shoots more midrange twos, which are also less efficient.

Virginia is the better rebounding team on both ends.

Slight advantage to Virginia on defense.

Forecast

KenPom: Virginia 79-73
BartTorvik: Virginia 78-71
ESPN BPI: Virginia +4.3

Game coverage

Pregame update: Availability

Devin Tillis is not listed on the pregame availability report, so, he is in the rotation tonight.

NC State timeout: UVA 8-3, 16:09/1st

Qadir Copeland and Will Wade just got into it after that turnover that led to a Thijs de Ridder runout.

Not sure what the eff happened there.

Didn’t look good.

Media timeout: Virginia 15-5, 11:47/1st

State isn’t going to keep missing everything: right now, they’re 2-of-16, 1-of-8 from three.

They’re getting good looks.

So is UVA, and their shots aren’t falling like they should: 4-of-11 FG, 2-of-6 3FG.

Virginia timeout: Virginia 18-15, 6:19/1st

Virginia went for a long, long stretch without a bucket, before the fast break three by Jacari White, off a feed from de Ridder.

I’ll credit State defensively: they’re fronting the post, taking away advantages there, and Virginia needs to figure out the counter.

It’s not dribbling into traffic.

Media timeout: Virginia 26-18, 3:28/1st

Virginia is 5-of-10 from three, and 3-of-12 from two – 3-of-10 at the rim.

The seven turnovers also not helping.

Nor is State getting seven offensive rebounds, though they haven’t converted any of those.

Half: Virginia 32, NC State 19

That was a slog, because both teams played elite defense.

Virginia just played more of it.

State: 6-of-33 FG, 2-of-15 3FG, 4-of-11 at the rim, 0-of-3 on paint 2Js, 0-of-4 in midrange.

UVA: 10-of-28 FG, 5-of-12 3FG, 4-of-12 at the rim, 1-of-3 on paint 2Js, o-of-1 in midrange, eight turnovers.

Johann Grunloh: five blocked shots

Ugonna Onyenso: three blocked shots

Media timeout: Virginia 41-28, 17:35/2nd

Trying to sort out what happened.

An NC State reserve was tossed.

You hire a POS coach, he recruits POS players, and they do POS things.

Media timeout: Virginia 49-33, 15:17/2nd

I have never wanted to see a team pantsed in front of the world more than tonight.

NC State as a university should be embarrassed that it hired that guy.

Game analysis: State is 4-of-6 from three this half.

Need to nip that in the bud.

Good news: they’re 4-of-6 from three, and they’ve lost ground.

Media timeout: Virginia 55-43, 11:49/2nd

This is where State needs to make a run, if they’re going to make one.

Neither side is getting many stops.

State is 8-of-12 FG, 4-of-7 3FG, 4-of-4 FT in the second half.

UVA is 7-of-10 FG, 2-of-4 3FG, 7-of-9 FT in the second half.

NC State timeout: Virginia 66-48, 8:39/2nd

Not counting anything, the way State is shooting threes in the second half – 5-of-9 3FG.

Media timeout: Virginia 68-52, 7:38/2nd

OK, here we go again: if State has a run in ’em, they need it here.

State has five offensive rebounds and six second-chance points in the second half.

Need to clean that up.

Virginia timeout: Virginia 78-55, 4:57/2nd

That was a fatigue timeout.

Grunloh has eight blocked shots.

De Ridder has 19 points (7-of-10 FG, 1-of-2 3FG, 4-of-4 FT).

Media timeout: Virginia 82-58, 3:00/2nd

The handshake line should be interesting. Stay tuned for that alone.

Final: Virginia 90, NC State 61

I have never been more pleased to see a team and its NCAA jail coach utterly and thoroughly embarrassed.

Seriously, Boo Corrigan, shame on you.

Will Wade left his starters on the floor when Ryan Odom went to his garbage time unit, like the scum human being that he is.

Everything about that athletics program down there is pathetic.

OK.

Virginia shot 70 percent in the second half, with helpful motivation from a dumb fight perpetrated by one of NC State’s bench mob, to roll to a 90-61 win over NC State.
