Liberty waits out four-hour weather delay, rallies to beat ECU, 35-24

LibertyLiberty had a Williams Stadium-record crowd of 24,076 fans on hand for East Carolina Saturday night.

For all of six plays.

Thunderstorms almost ended up calling the game. The game officials, sitting out the lengthy delay, eventually determined that they would not restart the game after 11 p.m. if the bad weather didn’t lift.

Things got going at 10:45 p.m., with almost nobody in the house, and ECU got out to a 17-0 lead, had a chance to add to it, didn’t, and Liberty stormed back with a big second half in a 35-24 win.

The delay – four hours, 37 minutes – went longer than the game, which played into the wee hours of Sunday morning.

The Flames (4-0) got three second-half TD passes from Kaidon Selter to Reese Smith to fuel the comeback.

Quinton Cooley ran for 105 yards on 19 carries, and sealed the win with a 21-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

Salter completed 19-of-32 passing attempts for 223 yards and a season-high four passing touchdowns.
