Four different St. John’s starters had at least three hits while starting pitcher James Lomangino worked seven innings for the 15-4 victory over JMU on Friday in the opening game of a three-game non-conference baseball series at Kaiser Stadium.
SJU improved to 11-10 with its eighth straight win overall and its 19th straight at home. JMU fell to 8-12.
The Red Storm totaled 21 hits and scored runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings to build a 7-2 lead before breaking the game open with a six-run seventh and adding two in the eighth. JMU scored single runs in the second and sixth innings and added two late runs in the ninth.
Sophomore catcher Bobby San Martin (Fairfax, Va./Centreville) was 2-for-4 with an RBI as JMU was limited to six hits for the game. Redshirt senior first baseman Matt Tenaglia (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) had a single, run, RBI and walk.
Lomangino allowed two runs, both unearned, on four hits with six strikeouts in seven innings to improve to 2-3. Redshirt sophomore Aaron Hoover (Centreville, Va./Westfield) was a last-minute starter after sophomore Mark Gunst (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI) was injured pregame. Hoover took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Right fielder Zach Lauricella reached base in all five plate appearances with a double, triple, home run, walk, hit by pitch, four runs scored and three RBIs. Center fielder Alex Caruso was 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. First baseman Matt Harris had three hits with two runs and two RBIs. Shortstop Jarred Mederos also had a three-hit game.
