uva basketballUgly, but satisfying, day for Justin Anderson Justin Anderson didn’t score from the field in the 66-51 win for #2 UVA at Boston College on Saturday.

And yet Anderson had maybe the three most important points of the day for the Cavs. With Virginia up 46-42 with 6:55 to go, Anderson was fouled on a three-point attempt, and after a media timeout made all three free throws to push the lead to seven.

Anderson finished with eight points, connecting on eight of his nine free-throw attempts, while going 0-for-8 from the field.

Big minutes from the freshmen Marial Shayok has been a key contributor in Tony Bennett’s rotation all season. Isaiah Wilkins has been a big contributor of late. After not logging a minute in either of UVA’s first two ACC wins (at Miami, at home vs. N.C. State), Wilkins has put in double-figures minutes in the last three, wins at Notre Dame, at home against Clemson and Saturday at Boston College.

Wilkins logged 13 minutes at BC, scoring six points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field to go with four rebounds.

His 15-foot jumper at the 14:09 mark was the launch of the 33-13 game-ending run for UVA.

Shayok had five points in 17 minutes off the bench, shooting 2-of-4 from the field and 1-of-3 from three-point range.

Post play Wilkins’ emergence has given Bennett flexibility with his bigs. The minutes for Wilkins against Notre Dame and Clemson came at the expense of Anthony Gill, who had an off-night against the Irish and was limited by foul trouble in the win over the Tigers. Saturday at BC it was Mike Tobey whose minutes were reduced.

Tobey looked out of sorts against the Eagles, and logged only nine minutes, while picking up three fouls, two rebounds and missing his only shot from the field.

Gill had 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds in 26 minutes. Darion Atkins had eight points and five rebounds in 24 minutes.

Quiet assassin London Perrantes hadn’t scored 32:16 into the game. He finished with eight to go with his six assists, hitting a pair of threes, the first giving UVA a six-point lead with 6:44 to go, the second pushing the lead to eight at the 4:47 mark.

Anatomy of the Cavalanche Virginia outscored Boston College 33-13 in the final 14:28. In that stretch, BC was 3-for-15 from the field and 7-of-8 from the line with two turnovers and scores on seven of 20 possessions. UVA was 10-of-15 from the field and 12-of-13 from the line with one turnover and scores on 16 of 20 possessions.
