Visiting the snow-covered Golden Ring in Iceland’s golden circle – major stops

Winter in Iceland is very unpredictable. You should expect strong winds, storms, and even blizzards with a low temperature in winter. Think about this if you are planning a Golden Ring trip. On the other hand, the Golden Circle in winter is lovely, but you have to ask yourself if you would like to drive or get a guided tour. The answer to this depends on how experienced you are with the roads and driving in snowy and icy conditions. Self-drive generally is recommended in summer.

The main stops on the Golden Ring are Thingvellir National Park, Geyser, and Gullfoss waterfall. The three stops are stunning all year round, but in winter, they are extraordinary beautiful representing the main natural wonders of Iceland.

Thingvellir National Park

Þingvellir National Park can be reached on the Golden Ring route northeast of Reykjavik. The Park features human and geologic history. It is listed in the UNESCO Register of World Heritage Sites due to its importance in the history of modern democracy. Here the Icelandic parliament started operating in 930 AD.

In the center of the Park, there is a broad rift valley, which appeared as the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates started separating. Walking in this valley means walking between Eurasia and the North American plaque.  Adventurous visitors can scuba dive in the rift.

Gullfoss Waterfall

The second most important stop on the Golden Ring is Gullfoss. It is a majestic waterfall that waters thunder down from 32 meters into a canyon, offering a stunning spectacle of white and blue colors created by the light hitting the ice. Its falling water is surrounded by icicles and the powerful stream of water bursts through layers of thick ice.

Geysir Geothermal Field is a third stop on the Golden Ring.

Geysir itself does not erupt anymore, but regular eruptions from smaller neighbor Strokkur, which erupts every few minutes, are spectaculars.  The visitors can enjoy a close view of this stunning phenomenon. The whole Geysir area with hot pools and smaller geysers is worth exploring, as well.  The geothermal activity makes the area a bit warmer and pleasant to spend some time there.

Iceland and its famous Golden Ring offers never-ending intriguing opportunities all year round. Travelers are offered a wealth of possible itineraries allowing to explore the most beautiful landscapes and experience the most exciting activities. Are you ready for the Icelandic adventure?
