The Harrisonburg Police Department is looking for assistance from the public after an assault Wednesday night at Purcell Park.

A woman told police she was walking the trails when an unknown male emerged from the brush and attacked her, grabbing her and attempting to sexually assault her.

The assault took place at approximately 7:15 p.m.

Police responded immediately with help from the James Madison University Police Department. The search for the suspect also included the drone operations team and a K9 dog.

The search of the area was unsuccessful.

Police are asking community members who live in the area to check their cameras for any suspicious activity or individuals matching the description of the suspect.

Anyone who was at Purcell Park on the evening of Oct. 8 and may have seen the suspect is also encouraged to contact the Harrisonburg Police Department.
