With spring in the air, Harrisonburg and the national League of American Bicyclists announce that May is National Bike Month, May 9 is Bike to School Day, and Friday, May 18 is Bike to Work Day.
Mayor Richard Baugh is to proclaim Bike Month in Harrisonburg at tonight’s City Council meeting, and urges everyone to bike to work or try cycling for fun, fitness or transportation. Participating Bike to Work Day cyclists should register at hburgbike2work.org. Free coffee, tea, bagels, homemade baked goods and fruit at 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. will be provided to all participants on Court Square in downtown Harrisonburg on Bike to Work Day.
Andy Clarke, President of the League of American Bicyclists, said, “Biking to work is an efficient and fun way to get the exercise you need, without having to find extra time to work out. And this year, with gasoline prices as high as they are, biking to work makes more sense than ever.” Suzi Carter, Outreach and Development Coordinator of the Northend Greenway, adds, “Commuting by bike also boosts your energy level and gives you the opportunity to engage with your environment and community.”
Spearheading local organizing for Harrisonburg’s Bike Month are the Northend Greenway and Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition. Local sponsors include the City of Harrisonburg, Harrisonburg-Rockingham Metropolitan Planning Organization, Rideshare.org, Shenandoah Bicycle Company, Mark’s Bike Shop, Mole Hill Bikes and Clementine Café.
