Georgia Tech wrecks Cavs, 56-20

Georgia Tech scored on its first play from scrimmage, and the Yellow Jackets offense didn’t slow down much from there.

Virginia was never able to get on track in an ugly 56-20 loss at Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday.

It was 14-0 Tech after a 70-yard TD pass from Tavin Washington to Zach Laskey on the first play from scrimmage and a 77-yard TD run by Orwin Smith on the second play of the Jackets’ next possession.

Michael Rocco connected with Jake McGee on a 19-yard TD pass late in the first quarter to briefly get UVa. back into the game at 14-7.

The game turned after a Washington 1-yard touchdown run made it 21-7 Georgia Tech. Khalek Shepherd was caught from behind at the Tech 20 after appearing to be on his way to a kickoff-return TD, and the Cavs failed to convert on a fourth-and-one play. The Yellow Jackets subsequently went on an 11-play, 85-yard drive capped by a Vad Lee 1-yard touchdown run that made it 28-7.

A Rocco interception in Virginia territory inside the two-minute mark of the first half set up the backbreaker, a Washington 1-yard plunge as time expired that made the score 35-7.

The only drama for Virginia fans in the second half was the chance to see backup quarterback Phillip Sims in action in relief of starter Michael Rocco, who was intercepted twice before being lifted. Sims, a transfer from Alabama and a former top recruit in the nation, was 6-for-8 passing for 56 yards and two touchdowns in mop-up duty.

Georgia Tech doubled Virginia’s total offense output – gaining 594 yards, including an otherworldly 461 yards on the ground, to Virginia’s 297 yards.
