The No. 14 UVA field hockey team (4-3, 0-1 ACC) earned a 2-0 shutout victory over No. 10 Princeton (3-2, 0-0 Ivy) on Friday (Sept. 16) at University Hall Turf Field in Charlottesville, Va.
Virginia sophomore goalie Carrera Lucas (Brooklandville, Md.) earned the first shut out of her career, making a career-high 14 saves. Lucas faced 25 Princeton shots and 10 Tiger penalty corners opportunities.
Junior Tara Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and senior Caleigh Foust (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) scored the Cavaliers’ goals.
“The first half was a great game for the spectators with a lot of up-and-down play,” said Virginia head coach Michele Madison. “We were able to move the ball well. I think we still need to work on our defense and protecting the circle. We got the shutout today, but Princeton had a lot of shots and a lot of penalty corners. I was definitely pleased with the outcome and felt this was a great team effort by everyone.”
Virginia, which only had three penalty corners in the game, scored on its second with Vittese knocking in a direct hit after a stick stop by junior Nadine de Koning (Laren, Netherlands). Senior Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, England) injected the ball, earning her team-leading fifth assist of the season.
Foust spotted the Cavaliers to a 2-0 lead five minutes into the second half. Senior Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) took a shot from the right side of the cage. A Tiger defender deflected the shot towards Foust, who bounced the ball over the goalie’s outstretched leg and into the net. It was Foust’s third goal of the season.
In addition to Lucas’ 14 saves, senior Emily Faught (Newton Square, Pa.) made her second defensive save of the season.
Princeton’s Ryan McCarthy took nine shots, seven of which were on goal. Grace Baylis made nine saves for the Tigers.
Virginia closes out its three-game week by hosting No. 5 UConn (6-0) on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.
