Excessive heat watch issued for Tuesday in Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch for Tuesday in Rockingham County and Harrisonburg.

Dangerously hot conditions are expected with heat index values up to 105 degrees possible.

Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

The excessive heat watch also includes some parts of Maryland and West Virginia.

  • Maryland: Central and Eastern Allegany County
  • Virginia: Rockingham County.
  • West Virginia: Hampshire, Hardy, Eastern Grant and Eastern Mineral counties
  • Counties: Central and Eastern Allegany, Rockingham, Hampshire, Hardy, Eastern Grant and Eastern Mineral
  • Cities: Cumberland, Harrisonburg, Romney, Moorefield, Petersburg, Antioch, Keyser, New Creek, Ridgeville, Russelldale, Headsville and Fort Ashby

Tips during heat watch

  • Be prepared to drink plenty of fluids
  • Stay in an air-conditioned room
  • Stay out of the sun
  • Check up on relatives and neighbors
  • Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
