An apartment fire believed to be started by a candle caused $15,000 in damage and displaced an Albemarle County family early Tuesday morning.

The fire in the 800 block of Mallside Forest Court was reported to 911 at 4:22 a.m.

The fire was located in a bedroom on the second floor of one of the apartments in the complex, according to Albemarle County Fire Rescue.

Three apartments have mostly water damage due to sprinkler activation. There was one person with minor injuries who refused treatment and transport to the hospital.

The fire displaced one adult, two children, and one dog.

The family is being assisted by the apartment complex to be relocated.

The investigation is being led by the Albemarle County Fire Marshals Office. It is believed the fire is accidental due to a candle too close to combustible materials.
