An Augusta County Sheriff’s Office deputy was struck by a vehicle during a traffic stop in Churchville this morning.

The male deputy, who has not been identified, was transported to Augusta Health with minor injuries where he was treated and released.

He is doing well and recovering, according to the ACSO.

The accident occurred at approximately 6:14 a.m. in the 2200 block of Scenic Highway in Augusta County.

The deputy had pulled over a driver for speeding and was outside of his patrol vehicle when he was struck by a passing vehicle. The deputy was hit in the back by the passenger-side mirror of the passing vehicle, causing the deputy to be thrown off the roadway.

According to Virginia State Police, the deputy was struck by a transit van that slowed near the traffic stop but did not see the deputy. The driver of the van, Richard Heishman, 80, of Edinburg, was charged with reckless driving.

The crash remains under investigation.
