Cuccinelli, McAuliffe campaigns spar over economics, taxes

The Ken Cuccinelli for governor campaign released a new ad today claiming that Terry McAuliffe’s support for the bipartisan transportation plan passed by the General Assembly earlier this year will help force a tax increase.

The Cuccinelli campaign claimed an in-depth analysis of McAuliffe’s policy proposals and campaign promises would cost Virginia an additional $14 billion over four years – or $1,700 a year for a family of four.

The only way to pay for the cost would be to raise taxes on Virginians, the campaign is saying.

The McAuliffe campaign hit back at Cuccinelli, calling the claims from the Republican a “new low.”

“After spending months under fire for his ties to Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams and an out-of-state energy company, Ken Cuccinelli sunk to a new low today with his latest round of desperate and misleading attacks on Terry McAuliffe,” said McAuliffe spokesperson Josh Schwerin. “Cuccinelli’s ‘announcement’ included fabricated numbers and more of the same attacks on investing in transportation infrastructure that Virginians have seen from him for years. His opposition to supporting projects funded through this year’s bipartisan transportation compromise and his attacks on Terry for supporting both the bipartisan effort to widen Route 58 and the extension of the Tide to Virginia Beach leave Cuccinelli yet again far out of the mainstream.”
