Fifteen years ago, the bodies of two 18-year-olds were found in Virginia at Caldwell Fields, in the Jefferson National Forest rural recreation area in Montgomery County.
On Aug. 27, 2009, Heidi Childs and David Metzler were found shot to death near the Craig County line on Route 621.
The criminal investigation determined that Childs and Metzler were killed in the evening hours the previous day.
Investigators interviewed numerous residents of nearby communities and have identified persons of interest and suspects in Montgomery, Craig and Roanoke counties. However, the case remains active, and no arrests have been made.
In the 15 years since the brutal murders of Childs and Metzler, a team remains committed to the investigation to find whoever is responsible for their deaths.
The multi-agency criminal investigation continues to develop leads and interview additional witnesses.
According to Virginia State Police, a team continues to pursue investigative steps on a weekly, if not daily basis. That team also is using new and emerging technologies to try to identify the killer.
“We intend to resolve this case”, said Special Agent Scott Mitchell of the Virginia State Police. “That means that we intend to identify and prosecute the person responsible for these brutal murders.”
The investigative team believe there may be people with relevant knowledge about what happened in the case but have not yet come forward, Mitchell said.
“There are relatives or associates of the offender who have learned concerning things in the intervening years or have held onto secrets all this time.”
There is a $100,000 reward for any tips that lead to an arrest. If you have any information on the Childs-Metzler murders, call the Virginia State Police at (540) 375-9589.
