The Central Shenandoah Health District is remembering those who lost their lives to a drug overdose and reminding residents that prevention support is available.
In Virginia, a fatal drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death. Last year, 1,403 Virginians lost their loves to drug overdoses; 97 of those deaths were within the CSHD.
“Even one overdose is too many,” says Dr. Allison Baroco, acting health director of CSHD. “Overdose is preventable, and the health department is glad to offer free Naloxone to its residents.”
International Overdose Awareness Day is recognized on Sunday, Aug. 31.
In an effort to prevent drug overdoses, CSHD encourages recovery and works to raise awareness about overdose prevention.
CSHD overdose prevention services include:
- Naloxone kits
- Overdose reversal education
- Fentanyl test strips
- Drug treatment service referrals
- Connections to medical care
- Connections to support services
The Central Shenandoah Health District serves the counties of Augusta, Bath, Highland, Rockbridge and Rockingham, and the cities of Buena Vista, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Staunton and Waynesboro.
