VMI led 1-0 into the midway point of the second half, before George Mason took control, exploding for four late goals to notch the 4-1 win on Thursday in Fairfax.
The Keydets struck first midway through the opening half (21:09) when goalkeeper Maren Ryberg booted a free kick deep into the Patriot goalbox to freshman Jaleesa Eichel, who tapped the ball with her shoulder and snuck it into the lower right corner of the net to give VMI an early 1-0 lead.
VMI sustained the lead until the 71st minute when Mason’s Keira Jeffries fought for a loose ball in the VMI goalbox and snuck it past Ryberg to knot the score at 1-1.
Ten minutes later, GMU’s Mia Casciani scored the game-winning goal at the 80:10 mark off an assist from Kylie Beauregard to give the Patriots the lead.
Mason would go on to score two late security goals in the final six minutes to finish the match with a 4-1 victory.
