Barry Trotz resigns as Washington Capitals coach

Washington CapitalsAlex Ovechkin is still going keg stands in the Stanley Cup, but life is going on for Washington Capitals coach Barry Trotz, now former Washington Capitals coach Barry Trotz.

Trotz announced Monday that he is resigning, 11 days after hoisting the Cup over his head in Vegas, and media reports have the reason being the coach and the franchise not being able to come to terms on a contract extension.

Trotz, 205-89 in four seasons with the Caps, and 762-568 in 19 seasons overall as an NHL head coach, was under contract through the end of the month.

“When I came to Washington four years ago we had one goal in mind and that was to bring the Stanley Cup to the nation’s capital. We had an incredible run this season culminating with our players and staff achieving our goal and sharing the excitement with our fans. I would like to thank Mr. Leonsis, Dick Patrick and Brian MacLellan for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this great organization. I would also like to thank our players and staff who worked tirelessly every day to achieve our success,” Trotz said in a statement today.

Trotz’s contract had included an automatic two-year extension if he coached the Caps to a Stanley Cup championship, but the salary included for the automatic extension in the contract negotiated four years ago would be considered below-market-value in 2018 market conditions.
