The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office sent out a brief update to the threat at Riverheads Middle School today.

According to the ACSO, the student responsible for the incident has been identified.

“Our investigation has confirmed that the threat was fabricated with the intent to falsely implicate another student,” the update read.

The student who initiated the false report is being addressed by school administration in accordance with disciplinary protocols.

There is no ongoing threat to the school, students or staff, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

An Augusta County middle school student allegedly “made up” that a fellow classmate threatened to “shoot up the school” and will now face consequences, according to a statement by the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office.

The ACSO received a report about a potential threat at Riverheads Middle School just after 7 a.m. this morning.

The initial investigation revealed this is a “fictitious threat” made up by a student. The suspect has been identified and is not at school today.

The ACSO, in coordination with the school’s administration and Superintendent’s office, continues to actively investigate the matter.

Out of an abundance of caution, additional deputies have been assigned to the Riverheads school complex.

“There is no threat to the students, staff and the community. School scheduling and school activities will remain normal today,” read a news release from the ACSO.

Last week, there was a similar threat at Fort Defiance High School in Augusta County. The ACSO determined there was no credible threat to the school and said it was being handled as “a personnel matter.”

The ACSO and Augusta County Public Schools remind parents to monitor, educate and counsel their children about social media.

Students and young adults may think these types of threats are funny. However, the ACSO and school administrators want parents to understand and explain that these threats have serious consequences. Threats of death or bodily injury to persons on school property is a felony offense.
