Local alternative country music band Dogwood Tales will be playing a show on Friday, Aug. 28, at Pale Fire Brewing in Harrisonburg to mark the release of their new album, “Every Star in Rockingham County.”

Admission to the show is free.

Local band Machete and the Richmond-based band Drook will open.

Ben Ryan and Kyle Grim launched Dogwood Tales in 2016, releasing their first album, “Too Hard to Tell,” in 2018.

After the release of “Too Hard to Tell,” the band expanded with Jake Golibart, Danny Gibney and Stephen Kuester joining on the drums, bass, and pedal steel.

“Every Star in Rockingham County” is the band’s fourth album release.

Ryan told me in an email that the band named it after Rockingham County “because that’s what it’s about.”

“Kyle wrote a song called ‘Mt. Jackson’ about his uncle who was a farmer and was struck by terrible health issues,” Ryan said. “There’s one called ‘McMemories’ about high school football games and the things you did in the Valley for fun when you were a kid. There’s one named after Ralph Sampson about growing up here and how that landscape has shifted and what it feels like.”
