I-81 lane closures in Rockbridge County for late May, June

The Virginia Department of Transportation has scheduled overnight lane closures for the first week of June on northbound Interstate 81 in rockbridge county. These closures are for pavement work on the truck climbing lane project, and are in addition to those previously announced for the last week of May.

Scheduled for the nights of Tuesday, May 27, and Monday June 2:  Right and center lane closures between mile markers 195 and 196 northbound. These overnight closures will run from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Scheduled for the nights of Wednesday, May 28 and Tuesday, June 3:  Left and center lane closures between mile markers 196 and 198 northbound. These overnight closures will run from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Scheduled for the nights of Thursday and Friday, May 29-30 and Wednesday and Thursday, June 4-5:  Left and center lane closures between mile markers 200 and 202 northbound. These closures will run from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

All work is weather permitting.

The I-81 truck climbing lane project valued at $74.2 million was awarded by Commonwealth Transportation Board on Feb. 5, 2009 to W. C. English Inc. of Lynchburg. The work zone is along the northbound lanes from mile marker 195.6 to 202.5, which is just north of Lexington. The project includes adding a third lane, allowing the two far right lanes for trucks with all three lanes open to non-tractor trailer vehicles. Also included in the project is bridge reconstruction at Route 716, Route 712 and Route 710, plus left and right shoulder work, guardrail work and drainage work.
