Seventh-ranked UVA jumped out to an early 14-4 lead at #21 Maryland and was able to keep its distance from the Terps the rest of the way in posting a 76-65 win on Wednesday in College Park, Md.
Virginia (8-0) did have to withstand tight officiating that resulted in foul trouble for starters London Perrantes and Anthony Gill, and injuries to starters Justin Anderson (ankle) and Darion Atkins (lower back) that limited their availability.
But even with the fouls and the nicks and bruises, the Cavs had too much for a Maryland team that had to play without leading scorer Dez Wells, out for four weeks with a broken wrist. Without Wells, who spearheaded an overtime upset win for Maryland over then-#3 Virginia in the Xfinity Center in March, Maryland had little punch in this one, shooting just 40 percent from the floor and staying in the game largely through success at the foul line, where the Terps were 27-for-36 on the night.
Virginia led 37-29 at the half, and Maryland cut the deficit to six early in the first half, but the Cavs led by double digits for the final 15:26, leading by as many as 17.
Game Notes
UVA shot 53.1 percent from the floor and outrebounded Maryland 34-22, limiting the Terrapins to just three offensive rebounds for the game.
Malcolm Brogdon had 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting to lead UVA. Anderson had 16 points and six rebounds. Mike Tobey had 14 points and six boards, and Gill had 11 points and six rebounds.
Freshman Marial Shayok had a solid game off the bench for Virginia, scoring nine points on 4-of-5 shooting while snaring five rebounds and dishing out four assists.
London Perrantes didn’t score and attempted just one shot on the night, but had seven assists without a turnover running the point.
Maryland got 16 points from Melo Trimble, who was just 2-for-9 from the field but went 12-for-14 at the foul line.
